Owl Pellets

Have you heard this song?
We're on our last week of learning about owls.
Have your kiddos come home singing this song?
 It's one of our favorites!

Hoo?
We have been anxiously awaiting our owl pellet day!
Just to be clear, we dissected owl PELLETS, not OWLS :)
Some of the firsties were omitting one word which made our experiment
sound much more gruesome!

The suspense was high, first we had to make our predictions of what we thought would be in our owl pellet.

So excited!

We thought they looked like mini baked potatoes!

We took turns breaking off pieces with our partner.

Looked to see if there were any bones sticking out.

We had to use our science tools.

Some of them were a little harder to get apart.....

.....and others just crumbled easily!

Found a skull with the teeth and everything!

A tail!

We had one pellet that apparently came from a vegetarian owl.....no bones!

The tricky part was matching up the bones to see what animal we had in our pellet, a lot of the bones looked a lot alike!

We made our best guesses!

The grand total was 4 mice, 4 rats, 2 birds and 1 vole (we think:)

We had SO much fun with this experiment!
We not only learned a lot more about owls today, but also about their prey!

Make sure to ask your kiddo what they had in THEIR pellet!

Mrs. Glick was bad at taking pictures.....

Eek! I was lacking in my photography last week! Here's a short recap.

We played Scoot! We had to identify numbers by looking at base ten blocks.

Hidden picture hundreds chart!

We started learning about owls.

Did you know a group of owls is called a parliament?

Marble Works were open during Fun Friday.

These girls chose the listening center!

Library is a free choice.

Extra practice with our BLends!

Check back later this week for pictures from our owl pellet dissection!

Our Spooky Week
We had a fun week celebrating Halloween, check out a few things that we did!

We worked on a Monster poem in our L.S.S journals.

We did a write the room activity using Halloween words.

We looked so cute all dressed up!

We had a snack during our party that was all ORANGE!

Did you know that Dorothy's mother was actually a witch?

Dorothy twins!

We had some Winona State students come and teach us about eating healthy.

We had to decide what foods were the healthiest.

We used our senses to write about Fall in our L.S.S notebooks.

Somebody's already onto the next holiday!

Busy Bats!
On Monday's we go and read with our fourth grade buddies!

We take turns. Sometimes we read to them......

......and sometimes they read to us!

We are learning about nouns!

In our noun book we had to draw a picture for each category of noun:
person, place, thing or animal!

We have some bats in our classroom! We had to write a describing word on our bats.

We also sorted through some facts and opinions about bats.
We decided that facts are something that is true, where as opinions are something that we might think - but everyone might not agree.

One of our math centers was to sort math facts into three categories:
more than 5, less than 5 or doubles.

We also had to decide if story problems wanted us to add or subtract.

We added new number puzzles. Some of them are in the hundreds!

At another math center we had to figure out what number the base ten blocks represented.

We read the story Stellaluna, after reading we made a venn diagram comparing bats and birds.

We even got to see a real bat in a jar!!

In our journal we wrote about what we would do if we had a pet bat.

One of our new favorites during read to self is our Reader's Theatre.
We get to put on plays together!

We have so much fun together!
We're in for a wild week of Halloween!

Thank goodness it's on a Thursday this year!:)
