Hoo?
We have been anxiously awaiting our owl pellet day!
Just to be clear, we dissected owl PELLETS, not OWLS :)
Some of the firsties were omitting one word which made our experiment
sound much more gruesome!
The suspense was high, first we had to make our predictions of what we thought would be in our owl pellet.
So excited!
We thought they looked like mini baked potatoes!
We took turns breaking off pieces with our partner.
Looked to see if there were any bones sticking out.
We had to use our science tools.
Some of them were a little harder to get apart.....
.....and others just crumbled easily!
Found a skull with the teeth and everything!
A tail!
We had one pellet that apparently came from a vegetarian owl.....no bones!
The tricky part was matching up the bones to see what animal we had in our pellet, a lot of the bones looked a lot alike!
We made our best guesses!
The grand total was 4 mice, 4 rats, 2 birds and 1 vole (we think:)
We had SO much fun with this experiment!
We not only learned a lot more about owls today, but also about their prey!
Make sure to ask your kiddo what they had in THEIR pellet!
